Gary reports on his hunts
Sunday and Monday.
2-15 & 2-16 2009

Gary DelRosal

On Sunday I found a rosie in the same hole with a wheat cent over in Hueytown. I almost missed it because I dug the wheat first then covered the hole even though I initially thought the coin would be silver from the tone and meter reading. I've gotten into the habit of re-checking the hole and glad I remembered to do it.

Yesterday I went over to Debardeleben. I'd been shutout the last three times there. Each time I go I wonder if there are any detectable old coins left. I found the IH in an area that I've gone over at least 20 times before. It was between two pieces of iron and 5" deep. I was moving fairly slow using an 8” coil and nearly went by it because I heard an iron tone but then caught just a hint of non-ferrous and backed up. It had a good repeatable two-way tone but in a very tight area. I think the experience gained from detecting Memorial park helped me listen more closely around the iron tones, plus not using disc. Another reason I think it hadn't been found previously is because it was heavily corroded (the worst I found there yet) and the meter reading was off and bounced a bit. I used electrolysis to clean it.

I found the old pin close to the brick sidewalk. It was 4-5" deep but loud and it pinpointed large. I really thought it might be my first silver quarter find there. I'm going to post it on the treasurenet's preservation forum to find out the best way to preserve the paint. Probably some type of spray clear coat.

AFTER! NICE

CLEAN
